Celtic Traverse FAQs

Celtic Traverse is an event run by Primal Challenges, one of Ireland's most popular trail-running companies. Established in 2009 the company are very experienced in sports tourism and staff have decades of experience in long distance challenges.

There will be around 6 - 8 staff members helping you throughout your visit. They will include the event director, first-aider, route guides and drivers. These hand-picked staff have worked on Celtic Traverse since it's inaugural event in 2013.

Our 'Early Bird' offer of saving €200 will finish at midnight (BST) on Friday 31st August 2018.

The price includes breakfast each morning (either cooked Irish breakfast or self-service continental style breakfast) and 2 evening meals (Monday and Friday) plus 2 BBQs (Wednesday and Saturday). This leaves 4 evenings (Arrival Sunday, Tuesday, Thursday and Departure Sunday) when you will have to pay for your own meals and it's a good opportunity to get out and explore the local eateries. Regarding lunch, we provide food and drinks on 5 of the 6 running days. For the other days we encourage you to take something from breakfast such as fruit for your lunch.

We often find that sharing a room with another guest can lead to a great new friendship. However, if you wish to upgrade please let us know. This will incur an extra cost and is subject to availability. Please note that roommates are paired by gender.

No. All excursions are included in the price.

No. It's our treat.

Ideally your flight should arrive before 3pm on Sunday 9th June. We understand that this is not always possible and flights are prone to delays but we will do our best to facilitate late arrivals. You also have the option to arrive the day before and book into an airport hotel. In this case we would recommend the Carlton Hotel at Dublin Airport. Please note that expenses incurred for overnight stays are your own.

We will meet up at the Carlton Hotel at Dublin Airport late afternoon on Sunday 9th June 2019. This is a short walk from the terminals. At the hotel reception ask for Celtic Traverse where they will show you to our staff. If you have arrived early you can take advantage of the shops and eateries within the airport. Please note that an exact meeting time will be revealed at a later date.

We recommend that you stay at the Carlton Hotel at Dublin Airport. It is a short walk to the terminals and the hotel has everything you need for an overnight stay. Please note that we are not responsible for booking your overnight stay or the costs incurred.

If you are booking homeward flights from Dublin Airport they must not fly out before 5pm on Sunday 16th June 2019. Any guests travelling on earlier flights will have to arrange their own Airport transfer.

The routes and distances are perfect for the average runner, not too tough but still challenging in parts. Ideally you should be in good health and have already experienced trail-running. Remember, it is not a race. You can take as much time as you wish to finish the route.

The trails are on multible terrains included forest floor, gravel, boardwalks, small lanes, meadows and lakeside pathways. Elevation at most is 1,170 metres and longest route distance is 28 kilometres/17 miles. The routes are best described as medium grade runs with challenges in a few places but with long easy stretches in many places.

We set out as a group but everyone runs at their own pace. There is no pressure on any guest to keep up with the quickest guests. There are lots of photo opportunities along the way so please feel free to stop and take in the scenery. We will always have a staff member at the back of the group to ensure that guests can receive support and encouragement.

We have first aid available at all times. If there's a more serious condition we can get you to a hospital where you will receive professional treatment. Please ensure that you have appropriate medical insurance to cover your trip to Ireland.

We recommend that you bring a small backpack, bladder, appropriate trail-running footwear and clothing, waterproof jacket, hat/headband, shades/sunglasses. Laundry facilities will not always be available so make sure you arrive with enough changes of clothing. We do not provide hiking poles, so please bring your own if you need them.

The trails are all waymarked. In the event of you running off route we can see you on our GPS tracking platform and we'll come to your aid. Our staff are never too far away from you so it will be unlikely that you'll stray off-route.

Don't worry. We won't be doing those distances. The video was taken during our Expedition Route in 2016. You will however, still run on the same routes featured in the video.

Creating memories that last a lifetime!

Ireland is famous for it's warm and friendly hospitality which you'll experience first hand throughout your Celtic Traverse adventure. Our running guests come from all over the world so you're guaranteed to make new friends and create memories to cherish forever.
